Android 6.0 Marshmallow factory images are out for Nexus devices

http://www.android-logiciels.fr/wp-content/themes/directorypress/thumbs//2015/08/android-m-news.png

Google already announced that it would release Android 6.0 Marshmallow this week, and it looks like the company wants to start in force. That's because it's already made factory images of the new version available for the Nexus devices that are supported.

The images are up on Google's specialized developer website, which is where you can also find instructions for flashing them. Keep in mind however that going this route will delete all data you've had on your phone or tablet, so make sure you back things up first.

The images are there for the LG Nexus 5, Motorola Nexus 6, Asus Nexus 7 (2013), HTC Nexus 9, and Asus Nexus Player. Older Nexus devices are not going to get official updates to Marshmallow, while the newly announced LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P will launch with it preinstalled.

Now that the factory images are available, expect over-the-air updates to start rolling out for the aforementioned devices within the next few days. Updating in this way will not wipe your data, so it's an easier method compared to flashing images. On the other hand, Google's OTA rollouts are generally very slow, so you will need to be patient if you choose this option.

Moto X Style will launch in India on October 8 according to new teaser

Of the duo of Moto X smartphones announced this year by Motorola, the Moto X Play is already available in India. On the other hand, the high-end Moto X Style isn't yet, but that may change very soon.

Motorola started teasing the launch of the Moto X Style in the subcontinent last week, and now it looks like we have an actual date to speak of. The image you can see below is a teaser put up by Flipkart, India's biggest online retailer (which could be gearing up to exclusively offer this device).

http://img6a.flixcart.com/www/promos/new/20151005-160914-moto-x-style-1-2.jpg

Now all that remains to be seen is whether the Moto X Style will actually be available for purchase on October 8 or if that's just the date of its announcement for the Indian market (in which case it's going to be released later).

As for pricing, it's expected to be in the INR 30,000-32,000 range (that's about $460-491 or €411-439 right now).

Upcoming OnePlus Mini has all of its specs detailed

Before the end of the year, OnePlus will unveil a new, even more affordable device. This has so far been confirmed many times by the Chinese company's management. Yet understandably OnePlus execs haven't disclosed any information about the upcoming device's specs.

That said, today a new rumor comes to seemingly reveal all of that. Before we delve into it, however, do note that all of this comes from an anonymous source, and as such you shouldn't take any of it for granted. Furthermore, the source itself claims that these details are from a prototype that's already two months old, which means that certain hardware specs may have changed in the meantime.

The phone could be called OnePlus Mini, since it will have a 5-inch touchscreen (with 1080p resolution and 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top). It will be powered by MediaTek's Helio X10 chipset (MT6795T), which comes with a 2.2 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU.

https://content.oneplus.net/skin/frontend/oneplus2015/default/images/feature/two/overview-topic-img.png

2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable eMMC 5.0 storage are in, but you can forget the previously talked about dual-camera setup. On the back we'll see a 13 MP unit with a Sony IMX258 sensor with f/2.0 aperture, complemented by a dual-tone LED flash. The selfie shooter will have 5 MP resolution and will be of the wide-angle variety in order to fit as many people into your "groufies" as necessary.

The battery capacity is said to be 3,000 or 3,100 mAh, which you'll charge through a USB Type-C port. Interestingly, some sort of quick charging support will be baked in, unlike in the more premium OnePlus 2. It's the same situation with NFC and an IR blaster, both of which will be integrated into the OnePlus Mini despite not having made it to the bigger device.

A fingerprint sensor will be on the back of the OnePlus Mini, and the handset will also have a 1.2W front-facing speaker, an FM radio, and IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Its shell will be plastic.

For all of this you'll only need to pay around $250, if the source of this rumor has it right. The OnePlus Mini should become available in November or December, though it's unclear if invites will be required for buying it.

LG G2 gets benchmarked with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on board

http://images.mobilefun.co.uk/graphics/300pixelp/sim-free-lg-g2-16gb-black-p41339-300.jpg

Just a few days ago LG led us to believe that the G3 and G4 would be getting updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow pretty soon, since the Korean company has already referenced them in its support documents for the devices.

And now, in a surprising development, it looks like the older G2 could be receiving the latest version of Android as an update at some point in the future. The G2 is already two years old so this would be unexpected for its owners.

An LG G2 running Android 6.0 has been seen in the database of Geekbench, one of the most well-known benchmarks for Google's mobile OS. So someone is clearly testing such an update. Of course, even if this is real (such benchmark runs aren't impossible to fake), LG could simply give up on the thought of bringing Marshmallow to the G2 in the future. So don't get your hopes up just yet.

LG hasn't been a fan of Android 5.1, as it hasn't updated either the G3 or the G2 to this release, so perhaps the company wants to skip that iteration of the OS and jump straight to 6.0.

Motorola announces which of its devices will get Android 6.0 updates

http://motoroot.890m.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Logo-Motorola-verde-300x300.jpg

Since Android 6.0 Marshmallow will officially make its debut next week when it will land on Google's Nexus line of devices, Motorola thought it fitting to publish a blog post outlining its plans regarding Marshmallow updates. It's unfortunate that in this day and age very few smartphone makers are so upfront about their update strategies.

As you'd expect, Motorola has published a list of its devices that are going to get updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Yet you might not have expected the list to be this short, or for certain handsets to be missing from it.

http://techtrickz.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/android-6-marshmallow.jpg

Let's start with the good news then. The following devices will see the newest version of Android:

• 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen)
• 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen)
• 2015 Moto X Play
• 2015 Moto G (3rd gen)
• 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen)
• 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen)
• 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE (2nd gen)
• DROID Turbo
• 2014 Moto MAXX
• 2014 Moto Turbo

Add to all of these the Motorola-made Nexus 6, which however will get its update straight from Google (as is customary in the Nexus program). You may have noticed that neither generation of the affordable Moto E has been included, nor the first-gen Moto G and Moto X. And while these two may be considered too old to update at this point, the second-gen Moto E is only a few months old.
An actual release timeline for the updates for the devices that are getting them hasn't been outed yet, but Motorola says information on timing should become available "in the coming weeks".

Moving on, the company has also announced that it's going to stop developing some of its apps and services that have functionality that's now either built into Android itself, is very similar to Android features, or for which there are many third party alternatives.

Hence, Moto Assist will be gone in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, along with Motorola Migrate, and the Google Chrome extension found in Motorola Connect. The focus here is apparently on keeping things simple and bloatware to a minimum, and we assume most people would agree with this philosophy.

Huawei Honor 6 gets Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with EMUI 3.1

Huawei Honor 6 is now getting the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, enhanced with the new EMUI 3.1 launcher. The first country to get the new firmware is India, but oddly the update is now available via the OTA service just yet.

Huawei has uploaded the ROM on the official Huawei India website, so you can download it from there and update it manually. Just few people reported for OTA notifications. The file is 1.3GB big, so in case you'll do the update manually, you should free at least 3GB on your phone.

http://webpothi.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Huawei-Honor-6.jpg

There is no official changelog for the new firmware, but it will upgrade your KitKat up to the latest Lollipop and bring some traces of Material design, lots of under-the-hood optimizations, better security and switch to ART runtime for better performance.

Huawei Honor 4C and Honor 4X already got the update - in case you've missed the news you can found the ROMs over the source link. Now it's turn for the Honor 6. Other markets should be getting the update very soon and hopefully the OTA release is just around the corner, too.

Amazon decides to stop selling Google Chromecast and Apple TV

 http://www.channeladvisor.com/caapi/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Amazon.png

Amazon has said that it will stop the sales of Google Chromecast and Apple TV later this month. The reason cited by the e-commerce giant is that the devices do not play well its Prime Video service.

"Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime," Amazon said in the e-mail to its marketplace sellers. "It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion."

New listings for the media-streaming devices from Google and Apple are no longer permitted, while existing inventory listings will disappear starting October 29, Amazon revealed. Meanwhile, the company is recommending Roku, Xbox, PlayStation, and its own Fire TV as "excellent choices" for customers.

It's worth mentioning that Google and Apple are the number 2 and 4 players, respectively, in the market which is dominated by Roku. Amazon claims the third spot.

Galaxy S7 will feature Snapdragon 820 in US and China, Exynos elsewhere: Korean report

 https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4_2ic4p5LOYxsmPB7CZmMB1_VKDa15hI24TOFXEb5gMSVZFnKHkf63gYx6gxMLCZ572oHMufX8yODxo8Lg8SWEJWwU8E9o_J92RqdoQ0LLYahenTYMQppV379J3SMBAZ7wyT2qeEPDWc/s300/Qualcomm-Snapdragon.jpg

Qualcomm has reportedly secured SoC orders for certain versions of the Galaxy S7, coming in “early 2016.”

The report comes from Electronics Times, a trusted Korean publication, via Reuters. Citing anonymous industry sources, Electronic Times reports that Samsung is once again going to use a mix of Qualcomm and Exynos SoCs for its flagship phone.

In the US and China, the world’s two largest markets, the Galaxy S7 will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC. In other markets, including in Europe and Asia, Samsung will use its own Exynos processor.

The report cites industry sources speculating that Qualcomm was able to secure Snapdragon 820 orders for the two most profitable markets by using its chip manufacturing orders as a negotiation argument. Put simply, Samsung gets lucrative chip foundry contracts from Qualcomm, and Qualcomm gets chip orders from Samsung.

Samsung and Qualcomm refused to comment the report, but the Korean giant stated that its  “business and semiconductor business are totally separated, [so] supply agreement of AP and foundry business do not affect each other.”

Samsung famously snubbed Qualcomm for its flagships this year, opting for its own Exynos 7420 chip. The loss of a big client – and the Snapdragon 810 overheating PR disaster that followed – left Qualcomm bruised out. Samsung, on the other hand, avoided the overheating problems that plagued HTC, LG, or Sony, and bagged more profit thanks to the use of its own silicon.

According to older reports, Samsung may use an Exynos 8890 processor on the Galaxy S7 (and presumably S7 Edge) units sold outside of US and China.

As for the Galaxy S7 release date, rumor has it, Samsung may have something to show us in early February. Following the early release of the Galaxy Note 5, a faster release of the S7 does make a lot of sense.

New Stagefright exploit puts over 1 billion Android devices at risk

http://pop.h-cdn.co/assets/cm/15/05/54cb03c805634_-_android-virus-1212-mdn.jpg

Stagefright has become the gift that keeps on giving. However, these aren’t fun gifts like ponies or Turboman action figures, rather these are the scary kind that expose our Android devices to external threats.

When the first exploit was discovered in July, the weakness made it possible for attackers to infect a device with malicious code through Android’s MMS multimedia preview feature. Google rushed to patch this vulnerability, but  only two weeks later a new bug was discovered and a fresh batch of patches had to be cooked up.  2`Now, months after we thought we were relatively safe, Stagefright has returned like horror movie monster in the third act.

Zimperium Security has discovered a new exploit in Stagefright that isn’t protected by any current patches. Attackers could encode malicious software into an mp3 or mp4 audio file. All the user needs to do is preview the infected file, and the program would theoretically infect the device. What’s worse is that this exploit can be deployed on public wifi networks or embedded in webpages, so experts are concerned about the possibility of a self-replicating virus or worm.

Because nearly all Androids make use of a preview function of some sort, the vast majority of Android devices currently in use are vulnerable to this Stagefright exploit. This is troubling news, because even the previous strategies used to deal with Stagefright have proven to be less effective than they were designed to be.

Of course, these types of threats are often not as scary as the FUD news that center around their reports. The odds of actually being infected are pretty low, but it’s still something Google will want to address sooner rather than later. Thankfully, Google has already begun work on patching this new threat, and they are planning on releasing it in October’s monthly security update.
Information related to the exploit have already been handed off to providers, and so far, there are no reports of any actual attacks using this vulnerability. Nevertheless, until the patch comes out, over a billion phones are left vulnerable.

Tag Heuer Android Watch launching November 9 for $1,800

Swiss manufacturer Tag Heuer is priming its first Android Wear smartwatch, which is set to launch in November. The company already has a firm foothold in the luxury watch market, so this could be the first Android wearable to offer the gold Apple Watch some serious competition. Here’s everything we know so far about the Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 price, specs, release date and features.

Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 price

The Tag Android Watch price is set at a somewhat eye-watering US$1,800. Its closest Android competitor in terms of price is the Huawei Watch, which costs US$800, while the mid-tier Apple Watch comes in at US$1,099. The Rose Gold variation costs up to US$17,000, so the Tag watch is a bargain when compared with that.

http://roonby.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Tag-Heuer-Carrera-SmartWatch-is-Called-Wearable-0.jpg

Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 release date

The Tag Android Watch release date is expected to be on or soon after the watch's November 9 launch in New York. We don't yet know which regions it will be available in, other than the US.

http://www.devicetowear.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/TAG-Heuer-Carrera-Calibre-Heuer-01-4-620x400.jpg

Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 features

The big draw for the Tag Android Watch is the 'Swiss Made' label it carries. The watch will be assembled in Switzerland, although the Intel processor it employs will not be built there. The Tag Android Watch will run Android Wear and it has been reported that the battery life will come in at around 40 hours.

On the subject of the Tag Watch lifespan, Tag Heuer UK Communications Manager Alexandra King told Wareable: "If your child completed their Masters degree, you might want to give them a watch. We want to create something that will stay on your watch for a lifetime, that's what Tag Heuer does. And as the technology changes, it will change."

It sounds as though Tag Heuer intends for the some of the watch elements to be changeable and upgradeable, but we're not yet sure how this will work.

We'll have more on the Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 soon. For now, is this something you're considering picking up? Let us know in the comments.

Patent licensing deal will see Microsoft Office apps pre-loaded on ASUS smartphones

http://cdn.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/office2013.png?e9577d

Microsoft and ASUS have announced a broadened patent licensing deal that will give ASUS access to more licensed technologies from Microsoft in its Android smartphones and tablets. According to the press release, it also appears that Microsoft Office services may come pre-installed on some ASUS devices as part of this deal as well. From Microsoft and ASUS:

The deal includes a broad cross-license covering, for example, ASUS Android-based phones and tablets and Microsoft software, devices and services. It paves the way for closer integration between the two companies, including pre-installation by ASUS of Microsoft Office productivity services on ASUS Android smartphones and tablets.
This isn't the first time Microsoft has struck a deal to have its Office suite pre-loaded on Android devices. Earlier this year, Microsoft also struck a deal with Samsung to have a swath of its services pre-loaded onto "select Android tablets," along with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

Huge Galaxy View tablet has specs confirmed through benchmark

Samsung has teased its upcoming Galaxy View tablet last month during its IFA event. This is going to be the company's biggest mobile device yet, as it's so far been rumored to sport a whopping 18.4-inch touchscreen. That is, if the Galaxy View turns out to be the tablet with the model number SM-T670.

Today the T670 was spotted at GFXBench, which means that its specs have once again been confirmed, through the benchmark's info listing.

The device apparently has an 18.5-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 2 MP front camera, no rear camera, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and it's powered by an unidentified Samsung Exynos 7 Octa chipset. This comes with a CPU sporting four Cortex-A57 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores, and the maximum clock speed seems to be 1.6 GHz. The GPU is a Mali-T720. The prototype that's been benchmarked was running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop at the time.

The lack of a rear camera seems surprising at first, but imagine how odd it would be to actually take pictures with an 18-inch tablet. The Galaxy View will allegedly be targeted at businesses and the education market, as well as consumers - in this case as a device for the living room. Since the Galaxy View has recently been Bluetooth certified, it should be announced soon.

The Nexus 6 is now available for $299.99 in the US

Google refreshed the Nexus smartphones two days ago and both the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P sound very interesting. The previous generation Motorola Nexus 6 is still quite an attractive offer though, especially with its new price.

While the new Nexus 6P is retailing at $500 and is already on sale, we shouldn't retire yet its predecessor - the Nexus 6. It offers a 6" Quad HD AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 805 chip with 3GB RAM, and a 13MP OIS camera. And now you can have this for $299.99.

A trusted seller on eBay has already sold more than 850 units of the phone and the quantities are rather limited. Still, the phone is still in stock and you can have it right now.

If this price suits you right, then you should hurry up and check the offer now.
We guess Motorola and Google will be lowering the official price down to a similar number in time for the Black Friday and the upcoming holiday season, so if you miss the offer now, we are sure there will be more opportunities.

Google And Microsoft Call A Truce, End Patent Lawsuits Over Motorola Mobility

http://juliesmills.typepad.com/.a/6a00d835249a4169e20192acb460e9970d-pi

After years of fighting in the courtroom, Google and Microsoft have decided that enough is enough. In a joint statement, the two tech giants announced that they have reached a settlement and are ending the 20 or so lawsuits underway in the US and Germany.

Bloomberg reports that much of the conflict has centered around Motorola Mobility, which at the time of Google's acquisition hadn't signed patent deals with Microsoft the way most other Android manufacturers had. Microsoft makes billions a year from Android licensing deals.

Under Google, Motorola was able to fight back with some success. During this period, Motorola wanted billions a year from Microsoft in royalties on the Xbox. The conflict persisted after Google sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo, because Google retained the company's patents.
Going forward, Google and Microsoft have agreed to work together on certain patent matters. One joint issue concerns delivering video over the web. Both are members of the newly formed Alliance for Open Media.
Here is the joint statement, as shared on GeekWire:
“Microsoft and Google are pleased to announce an agreement on patent issues. As part of the agreement, the companies will dismiss all pending patent infringement litigation between them, including cases related to Motorola Mobility. Separately, Google and Microsoft have agreed to collaborate on certain patent matters and anticipate working together in other areas in the future to benefit our customers.”

Be careful before buying Nexus 6p cases

After learning that some of the Nexus 6P’s sensors are shielded by a black sheet of glass on the rear, including the camera’s laser for laster-assisted autofocus, one unfortunate revelation has come to light: many cases are blocking that laser.

 verus nexus 6p case

Case makers appeared to have been in on the plans from the get-go, but their early renders now seem like little more than a hack job put together through leaked dimensions and CAD drawings. No one ever took into consideration that there could be anything other than a camera and flash on the rear panel, and thus their “ready before the device is official” cases now look kind of silly.
So if you’ve ordered one, be sure to double check the renders. If there’s no space exposed to the right of the camera sensor, it’s blocking the autofocus laser. You should do either one of two things:

  1. Cancel the order and wait for proper cases to start showing up.
  2. Contact the case manufacturer to see if they know about the flawed case design, and see if they plan to have the proper cutouts ready by the time it ships. (In the case of Verus, they’re already on it.) If not, refer to option #1.
And that’s that. It’s normally fine to buy cases before a phone has even been announced, but this is one of the rare instances where it might not have been so sweet to do so. If nothing else, at least you have a few more weeks before you’ll actually need one as the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X won’t begin shipping until late October.

Fed of up boring profile pictures? Well, Facebook will soon allow all of its users to stick up a short looping video in place of a regular motion-less profile picture.

Along with the new short video clips, Facebook will also be updating its social network to support temporary profile pictures that will revert back to a default after a set period of time. Facebook envisages users temporarily changing their picture for special events, such as birthdays or a vacation, to show support for sports teams or simply to reflect your mood.

This update aims to offer users a lot more choice over how their profile looks and Facebook is also adding in a new customizable space at the top of your profile. This space can be filled with details about your location, education or place of work and can also be accompanied by a selection of up to five of your favourite photos.

Finally, mobile profiles will be receiving a layout tweak which moves the profile photo or video right into the centre of the page and also makes them slightly larger. Photos and friends are also moved closer to the top of the page, which Facebook says will help people get to know each other a little easier.

This update is only available for a small number of iPhone users living in the UK and California at the moment, but it will be rolling out to every Facebook user in the near future.

ASUS has announced that it will start manufacturing smartphones in India in collaboration with Foxconn, to support India's 'Make in India' campaign. The devices will be manufactured in Foxconn's plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

The first phone to be manufactured will be the recently launched Zenfone 2 Laser, which will soon be followed by the Zenfone Go. ASUS aims to produce 150,000 smartphones in India per month by the end of the current financial year, which will account for almost 80% of the sales in India.

“India offers us a huge opportunity as smartphone penetration is just 10%. We are excited to announce our local manufacturing facility that will cater to the growing demands of the market”, said Peter Chang, Regional Head - South Asia & Country Manager – System Business Group - ASUS India. “The Indian government’s focus on ‘Make in India’ has opened a plethora of opportunities for international companies. It is an opportune time to make the announcement as it will enable us to bring our cutting edge products to consumers who are looking for features and design sensibilities of a high-end smartphone at an economic price.”

Chang further added, “We are aggressively targeting the Indian market. We aim to achieve 5% market share in the country by next year and empower all our customers with luxury.”
