Samsung was top smartphone vendor last quarter

http://www.techspot.com/images2/downloads/topdownload/2015/10/unnamed.png

Samsung was the top smartphone vendor in the world in Q3 2015, followed by rival Apple, according to a latest report from research firm Digitimes Research. While the South Korean company captured 25.6% market share in the quarter, the iPhone maker's share stood at 14.5%.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/05/Samsung_in_SM_Aura,_Bonifacio_Global_City.jpg

Huawei, Lenovo, and LG, rounded up the top 5 with 7.4%, 4.8%, and 4.5% market share, respectively. China's Xiaomi came in at the sixth spot with 3.8% market share, while Sony and Microsoft were at number 11 and 12, with 2% and 1.7% share, respectively.

Of the top-15 smartphone vendors mentioned in the report, nine are from China, two each from the US and South Korea, and one from Japan and Taiwan.

Overall, a total of 331.9 million smartphones were shipped globally last quarter, which translates into an year-on-year increase of 7.7% and a q-o-q increase of 10.5%. The report also forecasted a shipment of 396.8 million units in Q4, which would the take total 2015 shipments number to 1.326 billion, an y-o-y increase of 10.1%.

Huawei has shipped over 100 million smartphones this year

http://innovation-africa.com/2013/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Huawei-LOGO-small.jpg

Huawei has announced that it has shipped more than 100 million smartphones this year. The announcement was made by the Chinese company through its official Weibo account today. With this, Huawei has joined companies like Samsung and Apple in the 100 million club.

http://10apps.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/huawei-logo-stand.jpg

This comes nearly five months after the company, which is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, said that it's ahead of schedule on smartphone shipments, and will hit the 100 million milestone before the year ends.

Huawei recently launched its Mate 8 flagship in China, and the device is apparently selling well there. Next year will be an important year for the company as it is expected to start selling its
handsets in the United States in 2016 - an announcement related to its US plans will be made at the
upcoming CES show in January.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, the Mate 8 and Honor 5X will be the first Huawei handsets that will be launched in the US. The company will also launch a smartwatch in the country sometime next year.

Samsung announces special Winter Edition Note5 with 128GB of storage

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTAwWDUwMA==/z/21QAAOSwDNdV0dbQ/$_35.JPG
We are still unsure if and when Samsung will bring the Note5 to Europe worldwide and in the meantime, all we can do is keep tabs on its progress on the home South Korean turf. Today brings the latest piece of news about the handset - Samsung has announced a special Winter Edition for the holiday season. Its distinctive feature is undoubtedly the 128GB of built-in storage – an option that was circulated in rumors prior to the Note5's initial release, but never came to pass.

The Winter Edition Note5 will only be available in the South Korean market, through SKT and KT carriers and with a price tag of KRW 999,900 (about $845 at current exchange rates). Color options for the handset include Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium.

http://cdn04.androidauthority.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Gold-Galaxy-Note-5-1.jpg

Samsung is offering other holiday deals as well on various S6 edge models, wireless chargers, battery packs as well as accessories like the Gear VR and Gear S2 smartwatch. As usual, you can get a pretty good deal this time of year.

And if it is the Note5 you are after in particular and you currently reside in neither the US nor South Korea, you might actually have to wait just a bit longer, as rumors have been hinting at an early 2016 EU release.

Parameter Descriptions
These are all direct from the Doze source code.

Inactive Timeout - inactive_to
This is the time, after becoming inactive, at which we start looking at the motion sensor to determine if the device is being left alone. We don't do this immediately after going inactive just because we don't want to be continually running the significant motion sensor whenever the screen is off.

Sensing Timeout - sensing_to
If we don't receive a callback from AnyMotion in this amount of time + locating_to, we will change from STATE_SENSING to STATE_INACTIVE, and any AnyMotion callbacks while not in STATE_SENSING will be ignored.

Locating Timeout - locating_to
This is how long we will wait to try to get a good location fix before going in to idle mode.

Location Accuracy - location_accuracy
The desired maximum accuracy (in meters) we consider the location to be good enough to go on to idle. We will be trying to get an accuracy fix at least this good or until locating_to expires.

Motion Inactive Timeout - motion_inactive_to
This is the time, after seeing motion, that we wait after becoming inactive from that until we start looking for motion again.

Idle After Inactive Timeout - idle_after_inactive_to
This is the time, after the inactive timeout elapses, that we will wait looking for significant motion until we truly consider the device to be idle.

Idle Pending Timeout - idle_pending_to
This is the initial time, after being idle, that we will allow ourself to be back in the IDLE_PENDING state allowing the system to run normally until we return to idle.

Max Idle Pending Timeout - max_idle_pending_to
Maximum pending idle timeout (time spent running) we will be allowed to use.

Idle Pending Factor - idle_pending_factor
Scaling factor to apply to current pending idle timeout each time we cycle through that state.

Idle Timeout - idle_to
This is the initial time that we want to sit in the idle state before waking up again to return to pending idle and allowing normal work to run.

Max Idle Timeout - max_idle_to
Maximum idle duration we will be allowed to use.

Idle Factor - idle_factor
Scaling factor to apply to current idle timeout each time we cycle through that state.

Min Time to Alarm - min_time_to_alarm
This is the minimum time we will allow until the next upcoming alarm for us to actually go in to idle mode.

Max Temp App Whitelist Duration - max_temp_app_whitelist_duration
Max amount of time to temporarily whitelist an app when it receives a high tickle.

MMS Temp App Whitelist Duration - mms_temp_app_whitelist_duration
Amount of time we would like to whitelist an app that is receiving an MMS.

SMS Temp App Whitelist Duration - sms_temp_app_whitelist_duration
Amount of time we would like to whitelist an app that is receiving an SMS.

Xiaomi smartphone sales could hit 73 million mark this year, fall short of initial forecast

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Pd5vMHvXCfok9I1ftDyvPMkqtzCBzXfkIeH7TuShdyGBVQ7QeASNQREJR2k8ypTtQAk9=w300

Back in March this year, Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun said that the company is aiming to sell somewhere between 80 to 100 million smartphone units in 2015. However, it now looks like the five-year-old firm will miss the target this year.

http://cdn.ndtv.com/tech/xiaomi_mi_4i_white_screen_press_image.jpg

According to a Chinese analyst, the final figure could be somewhere around 73 million. This came a day after Chairman Jun played down the 80 million target, saying that's not the first priority for the company. "What we care about the most is the rate of customer satisfaction," he had said.

Quarter-wise, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer sold 15 million units in Q1 2015, followed by 20 million and 18.5 million units in Q2 and Q3, respectively. This suggests that Q4 will see Xiaomi selling over 20 million handsets, making it the most successful quarter for the company.

Apple outs iOS 9.2.1 Public Beta 1

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikt58C3I19SYU_w6FeBfc8SDjALXNlJcf54PXhm1aJGBGUSSVOe0AkN5kJcEn4Gu0a5Qy530ONE0TFPDXshNdTOJnZUpFatybrr23PjLxicBqWOnqSSL-lrJXT4dkBXlQ0Zz8q5LWu01E/s1600/IOS9.png

iOS 9.2 only started rolling out to supported devices less than ten days ago, and today Apple's already pushing out a new software version. This time however we're not talking about a final release, rather a new public beta.

iOS 9.2.1 Public Beta 1 is now available for those who've signed up for Apple's beta testing program. If you're in it, then expect to see an update notification any minute now (if you haven't gotten it already).

As of now it's unclear what exactly is included in the new software, because there's no changelog to speak of. However, as this is a x.x.1 release, you probably shouldn't expect any new features, just a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements. If the beta testing goes well, it's possible that we'll see the finalized iOS 9.2.1 in the wild soon.

Qualcomm renaming Snapdragon 618 and 620 processors… but why?

http://uu.appsforall.ru/52af3e5032c0c4.60986396.png

Qualcomm just doesn’t believe the names Snapdragon 618 and 620 have enough of wow factor, it seems. That is just not enough of a big number to showcase how much more awesome these new processors are, right? The San Diego-based chip maker has backpedaled on the naming of these two chipsets and decided to instead call then Snapdragon 650 and 652, relatively.

But the question still remains – why?! Well, it’s not so much that Qualcomm doesn’t think the 618 and 620 numbers are impressive enough, they just believe the capabilities these CPUs bring to the table are enough to put them in another category. At least when compared to the 615, 616 and 617.
The main improvements in these chips are the inclusion of the X8 LTE modem with CAT 6 support and carrier aggregation. Qualcomm also mentions the “advanced ARM-A72 CPU and next generation Qualcomm Adreno 510 GPU.”

snapdragon-650-652-feature_0
“We’ve been developing the Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 processors over the last 12 months, and the superior capabilities and performance positions them well above other processors in this tier. For example, the 4K Ultra HD video capture, playback and gaming experiences are unique for this tier, while the hi-resolution camera and 4G LTE experiences push the limits for this category.”
Although this change may sound a bit silly to many of us, I believe it may be some form of strategic move. Maybe Qualcomm would still like to release lower-end CPUs under the 618 or 620 names, with technology more on par with older processors.

This won’t affect you much right now, as no phones have the Snapdragon 650 or 652 on board, but it will be something to keep in mind if you want to research your processor at its fullest.
But what do you guys think? Was this completely unnecessary? Did Qualcomm make the right move? Hit the comments

First photo of the Moto X (4th Gen) leaks, shows metal unibody design

 http://www.androidgb.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Moto-logo.png

Motorola is working on the fourth generation Moto X and a photo of its effort has leaked. The photo shows a metal unibody design, which is quite different from the current generation Moto X Style.

There's no information on specifications just yet. Looking at the photo, the upcoming Moto X (4th Gen) has a redesigned camera housing, protected with a large glass. On it, you can spot the Moto logo as well as a dual-tone flash. Below the camera, there's the usual Motorola logo, which look to sit flush with the back this time around.

We assume the top and bottom of the back is made of plastic in order for the antennas to work. The speaker grille is also at the bottom, but we don't know if it's stereo or not.

HTC banned from selling smartphones through Deutsche Telekom

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/poux31rEDqUISRyVOt3v5iERKoHm6y75APzrVT5Zdzn6_6FNE_bFp9X06JL8XDlAT50=w300

HTC may have hit a six-month high revenue in November helped by the latest HTC One A9, but it recently lost a legal battle in Germany, which may cost the company a lot. Later this month HTC will have to cease all smartphone sales through Deutsche Telekom AG.

http://www.watsonproduction.com/images/Portfolio/Press/DeutscheTelekom/logo.png

Apparently HTC was sued over patent infringement and lost the battle. The Texas-based Acacia Research Group, a patent licensing company, was granted an injunction against HTC smartphones sold through Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) in Germany. The infringed patent concerns voice coding technology.

The ban will be applied later this month so the HTC phones are still available through Deutsche Telekom. Meanwhile HTC is working on a solution in order to avoid actual sales halt.
Deutsche Telekom is a German Telecommunications company, which owns many carriers around the globe and the German government is its biggest shareholder. If HTC doesn't succeed into resolving the issues (paying for the patents), there is a good chance Acacia pursuits the same injunctions over other Deutsche Telekom-related carriers, which will be a huge blow for the struggling HTC.

Snapdragon 820 might be exclusive to Samsung until April

http://www.motorola-tablet.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Samsung-Galaxy-S7-magnesium-300x300.jpg

The Samsung Galaxy S7 has been rumored to arrive in two versions, one of which will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 chipset at the helm. But now it looks like the Korean company will be the only one to use Qualcomm's next high-end chip, at least initially.

According to a rumor out of China, Samsung will have an exclusive on the Snapdragon 820 until April. So in the first three months of next year no other smartphone manufacturer will launch a device sporting this particular SoC.

Do note however that the evidence for this is claimed to be anecdotal, and nothing more - so this is certainly a situation that may not pan out. On the other hand, if it does, then Samsung could have a competitive advantage for a few weeks, if the S7 gets unveiled (as expected) at MWC in February and then starts shipping in March.

Samsung's next flagship smartphone has been said to come with a pressure-sensitive screen (a la Apple's 3D Touch), a retina scanner, a USB Type-C port, an improved camera, and possibly expandable storage (but only for the non-curved iteration of the phone).

6 inch Samsung Galaxy A9 leaks in detail: Snapdragon 620 and a 4,000mah battery

https://cdn.dmx.vn/Products/Images/42/73493/samsung-galaxy-a9--300x300.jpg

Samsung Galaxy A9 will be joining the recently announced A3, A5, and A7 models of the refreshed Galaxy A (2016) lineup. The smartphone leaked via official promo pictures and is expected to go official later this month.

The Galaxy A9 is going to feature a 6" Super AMOLED screen of 1080p resolution and run on the Snapdragon 620 chipset with 3GB of RAM. The 620 platform offers a powerful octa-core 1.8GHz processor with 4x Cortex-A72 and 4x Cortex-A53 cores, while the GPU in charge of graphics is Adreno 510.

The Galaxy A9 will be following the trend established by the smaller A3, A5, and A7 from the 2016 lineup and will be built around a metal frame and dual 2.5D glass panels.

The rest of the specs of the Galaxy A9 include a 13MP rear camera with optical image stabilization and bright f/1.9 aperture. There is also an 8MP selfie snapper with support for panoramic pictures, 32GB expandable storage, LTE Cat.7 connectivity, and a 4,000 mAh battery.

With such a beefy juice pack, the Galaxy A9 is touted to feature power bank capabilities. Those should be supported natively by Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but the Galaxy A9 will be launching on 5.1.1 Lollipop, so we can't confirm this feature availability just yet.

Finally, the Galaxy A9 will support Samsung Pay and will feature a fingerprint scanner. It will be launching on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, but a Marshmallow update is scheduled for the months post the release.

Samsung Galaxy A9 is expected to go official very soon and hit the stores around Christmas or in early January. The price in China will be north of CNY 3,000, which means more than €430.

Xiaomi launches Redmi Note Prime with 5.5-inch display, 3100mAh battery

http://tuxiaomi.es/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Xiaomi_Redmi_Note_21-300x300.png

After the Redmi 2 Prime, Xiaomi has launched its second made-in-India handset. Dubbed Redmi Note Prime, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 410 SoC with quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, and sports a 5.5-inch (720x1280 pixel resolution) IPS display.

http://www.bgr.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/xiaomi-redmi-note-2-launched.jpg

It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a 3,100mAh battery. In terms of camera, the Redmi Note Prime features a 13MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter. Measuring 154x78.7x9.4mm and weighing in at 185g, the smartphone runs Android 4.4 KitKat-based MIUI 7, and offers support for 4G and dual-SIM.

http://cdn.ndtv.com/tech/xiaomi_redmi_note_2_prices_official.jpg

"With the launch of Redmi Note Prime, we are glad to provide our Mi Fans an opportunity to upgrade to an even more powerful smartphone with an expanded memory and dual-SIM capabilities," said Manu Jain, Xiaomi's India Head. "The 3100mAh high-capacity battery, coupled with MIUI optimizations, has enabled Redmi Note Prime to achieve the most impressive battery performance yet. Local manufacturing shows Xiaomi's commitment to being a part of fabric of India and we are truly excited to roll out our second 'Made in India' offering for our Mi fans."

Carrying an INR 8,499 (around $125) price tag, the handset is currently an Amazon India exclusive, with sales opening tomorrow morning. In addition, it's also listed on Mi.com.

Moto X Style begins getting Android 6.0 update

Earlier this week, Motorola revealed that the company has started the Android 6.0 soak test for the 2015 Moto X Style in several European countries. And now, it looks like the update has already begun rolling out.

https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/87b6ce8273204ed209702f37e209dcabc327db57/0_0_2100_1260/master/2100.jpg?w=620&q=85&auto=format&sharp=10&s=dbd4f360b60a36b4c2e2bf528ec0481f

According to an Android Police report, which cited one of the publication's readers, the device has started getting the Marshmallow update in the United Kingdom. There's, however, currently no information on if and which other regions are seeing the rollout.

If you aren't already aware, the handset's US variant - the Moto X Pure Edition (2015) - started receiving the Android 6.0 update earlier this week.

Xiaomi Mi 5 seemingly has its front panel leaked

http://xiaomi-mi5.info/images/Xiaomi-Company-Mi-Logo-300x300.png

Over the past few days we've seen quite a few leaks regarding the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5, the flagship smartphone that the company's CEO says is "worth waiting for". Not one, but two different renders claiming to show the Mi 5 have surfaced, and yet they aren't identical. Today the plot thickens, since we allegedly get a leak of the phone's front panel.

Once again that much-rumored physical Home button seems to be confirmed, here in the form of a cutout in the front panel. This button will incorporate a fingerprint scanner, as otherwise Xiaomi could have just kept its traditional capacitive button layout.

The corners of the Mi 5 will be rounded as you can see, and the design of this panel happens to align nicely to that of the handset depicted in yesterday's leaked render (though that oddly did not feature the Mi logo on the front). What you can see below is the back of the front panel, with all of its connectors.

The Mi 5 has been rumored to sport a 5" or 5.2" touchscreen, and it might have 1080p resolution. It should be powered by Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset, and could also get 4GB of RAM, a 16 MP rear camera, an 8 MP selfie shooter, and a USB Type-C port. It is probably going to feature a full metal construction, launching with Android 6.0 Marshmallow on board underneath the latest iteration of Xiaomi's MIUI. As for color options, it's expected to come in three of those: silver, gold, and rose gold.

Alleged leaks of Galaxy S7 hardware chassis

http://android.trendolizer.com/assets_c/2015/11/2160832-thumb-300xauto-1882201.jpg

There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is already in production for an early 2016 release. Some photos were taken along this process of the alleged Galaxy S7 and leaked to the public, though, the original post from Weibo has been taken down since then.

Though, just as with any leak, we can’t say for sure that this is actually the Galaxy S7, for all we know it could be one many smartphone manufacturers making a similar looking phone.

The photos show a wrap-around metal border design - something that we will probably keep seeing for at least another couple of years.

We expect the Galaxy S7 to be announced in February with a February or March launch. The S7 is also to come with a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display with a 1440p resolution, Android Marshmallow, Gorilla Glass 5, and either an Exynos 8890 chip or a Snapdragon 820 chipset.

We're all about Snapdragon 820 today. After we told you about a potential Lumia that may utilize Qualcomm's flagship chipset for next year, and benchmark scores revealed the SoC to be a top performer, we're now learning that it may be featured in the 2016 Nexus smartphone, again made by Huawei.
The Chinese heavyweight has only made a single Nexus - this year's Nexus 6P, but the rumor goes that Google will be partnering with it for at least another year. And if the Snapdragon 820 is every bit as powerful as initial reports suggest, it's only natural for it to be the chosen one to do the job.

The info comes from Chinese electronics industry analyst Pan Jiutang, and he's putting Huawei in a list along with other big names like Samsung, Sony, LG, and Motorola, who will be outfitting devices with the S820.

Apparently, Google isn't a fan of Huawei's in-house top-end solution, the Kirin 950, which Huawei uses in the recently announced Mate 8.

Naturally, it's too early to consider this information final, and the ongoing hype around the Snapdragon 820 might have gotten people overly excited. That said, the chip remains the most logical solution for a Google flagship in 2016.
